Protein and fibre meal ideas can begin with food you already eat. Look at one familiar meal: what supplies protein, and which plant foods contribute fibre? Start with one useful addition without setting a personal nutrient target from a general article.
Find the protein and fibre already in your meal
Protein provides building blocks for structures such as muscle. Fibre occurs in plant foods, including whole grains, vegetables, fruit and pulses. WHO includes these in its healthy-diet guidance.
Eggs, yogurt, fish, poultry and tofu are everyday protein options. Beans, peas and lentils provide both protein and fibre, as the NHS Eatwell Guide explains.
Use familiar breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas
- Breakfast: eggs or beans on toast, with fruit or vegetables alongside.
- Another breakfast: oats prepared with milk or a suitable alternative, plus fruit. Protein content depends on the ingredients.
- Lunch: a rice bowl with beans and vegetables, or a sandwich with a suitable protein filling.
- Dinner: lentils in a familiar tomato sauce, or fish, tofu or poultry with vegetables and a carbohydrate food.
These are not equivalent swaps or a complete day's nutrition plan. For a broader framework, read how to build a balanced meal.
Make one useful addition
Keep the dish recognisable. Lentils may suit a sauce; beans could fit a soup or wrap. If you dislike one wholegrain food, try another fibre-containing option elsewhere.
Compare packaged-food labels as a whole, including serving sizes and ingredients. A front-of-pack protein claim says little about the rest of your day. A meal can include starches, fats and flavours too.
Put the next useful ingredient on your list
- Choose a meal you want to repeat.
- Identify its protein and fibre sources.
- Pick one addition you enjoy and can prepare.
- Add it to your list, checking how much you can use and store.
